On 1 January 2023, Cineca joined EBRAINS, the digital research infrastructure (RI), created by the EU-funded Human Brain Project (HBP), to foster brain-related research and to help translate the latest scientific discoveries into innovation in medicine and industry, for the benefit of patients and society.
EBRAINS’ goal is to accelerate the effort to understand human brain function and disease, supporting scientists in performing modelling and simulation of brain function, by providing digital tools and services which can be used to address challenges in brain research and brain-inspired technology development. The EBRAINS research infrastructure is the entry point for researchers to discover EBRAINS services, developed by the EU-funded Human Brain Project.
Cineca’s role in the project
Cineca is contributing to the development of the EBRAINS Italian National Node, providing expertise to define the data management plan, fostering the adoption of technology solutions developed in HBP and Fenix, providing computational and storage resources, and supporting the implementation and optimization of neuroscience workflows and workflows as service. Moreover, Cineca will take care of maintaining operational those services needed to develop and release future services identified by the EBRAINS Italian National Node, guaranteeing the compatibility with EBRAINS’ policies and strategies, in a close collaboration with the EBRAINS National Nodes in Europe.

About Cineca
CINECA, established in 1969, is a not-for-profit consortium of more than 110 members. It is the Italian national supercomputing facility, one of the largest in Europe; its HPC infrastructure is equipped with cutting-edge technology, and its highly qualified personnel cooperate with researchers and customers for the most effective exploitation of the HPC systems, in both the academic and industrial fields.
CINECA has hosted and managed state-of-the-art HPC infrastructures for decades, for the benefit of the Italian and of the European scientific-academic and industrial communities. Its most recent acquisition is the EuroHPC JU’s Leonardo supercomputer.
Currently CINECA is managing 4 Tier-0 systems (at position 4, 13, 24, 48 of the Top500 supercomputer list of November 2022) and several Tier-1 clusters. CINECA will also host one of the first EuroHPC quantum computers in Europe and it will manage the new Tier-1 HPC clusters for the Italian National Center for HPC.
