Scientific Visualization

Since the early Eighties, Cineca uses and develops technologies and tools for scientific visualization and virtual reality. They allow fast and effective analysis and interpretations. An image is able to convey the results of a simulation in a more effective and immediate way than a numerical tabulation.

Nowadays, transforming in images large amounts of data, obtained from numerical simulations, through techniques and methods of scientific visualization has become an indispensable process for understanding the phenomena and communicating the results of research projects.

The areas of expertise at Cineca in interactive 3D graphics and scientific visualization range from physics, chemistry, astronomy, fluid dynamics, meteorology, medicine and cultural heritage.

The methodological capabilities developed at Cineca enable the identification of the most appropriate visualization techniques in order to shape the information deriving from the data. Furthermore Cineca bases its activities on scientific visualization on a chain of open source products, some of them internally developed (vtkGUI, OpenMAF), linked to the Visualisation Toolkit (VTK), one of the best scientific visualization libraries currently available.

Cineca ranks among the Italian and European centers that have a greater knowledge in the use and extension of VTK and provides consulting services and enhanced support to those who relies on this technology for scientific visualization activities. The visualization laboratory, VIS.IT lab, provides a space for graduate students and researchers to assist them in the activity of scientific visualization.

A trend in numerical simulation and, hence, in scientific visualization shows a continuous and exponential growth in the amount of produced data. Cineca offers a service of remote visualization to analyze the results of simulations on your own desktop using your visualization tools without the need to transfer data. It is also possible to devise solutions for monitoring and steering simulations for a more efficient use of computing resources.
In multidisciplinary research projects and every time the working group is geographically distributed we can also offer advanced solutions that enable collaborative visualization to analyze the simulation results residing at Cineca.

Scientific and industrial research find in visualization techniques a key issue, especially if integrated in a collaborative working environment. Cineca provides the researchers with its virtual theater, that allows the visualization of data and complex models using virtual reality techniques.
