The Information and Knowledge Management Department deals with methods and techniques for the retrieval, management and analysis of data, information and knowledge.
Begun as a Department dedicated to the development of data analysis support technologies, over time it has met the increasing need for solutions to manage large flows of information typical of complex organisations and in general the evolution towards an information society. Its solutions go from data, to information understood as organisation of data, to knowledge understood as semantics of information.
The Department has interpreted this evolution towards Knowledge Management as the need approach differently to data analysis. As a consequence it has developed tools capable of treating not only the datum itself, but also the meaning associated to it by context.
The areas of application of the different technologies developed by this department vary from large collections of socio-economic data, to those that concern the management and control of data flows in large organisations, up to Internet-based applications, such as the telematic collection of data and the management of web sites and portals.
Within the data treatment context, several technologies for the management of data, of its retrieval and of its analysis have been developed, and are currently maintained.
