Casalecchio di Reno, Italy -- 21/06/2011 - The new GPU supercomputer introduced by SuperComputing Solutions - SCS S.r.l - CINECA is the fastest supercomputer available to Italian industrial and public researchers today, ranked at the 54th position in the top500, the list of the most powerful supercomputers in the world.
This supercomputer will initially be used to optimize and develop applications targeted at hybrid architectures, leveraging software applications in the fields of computational fluid dynamics, material and life science, and geophysics. The computing system will also be made available to European researchers as a Tier-1 system of the PRACE infrastructure.
The PLX cluster is based on 274 IBM iDataPlex M3 server nodes, each with two NVIDIA Tesla M2070 GPUs, two Intel Westmere sockets and 48 GB of main memory. Another 10 IBM iDataPlex M3 server nodes come each with two NVIDIA Tesla M2070Q GPUs, addressing computational and remote visualization tasks. IBM DataPlex is a highly scalable system that can lower power, cooling and space requirements.
SCS S.r.l. is a Public-private partnership, created by CINECA for added value services and technology transfer activities in a range of industry segments that use HPC. SCS S.r.l connects the academic world, the pure research community, and the world of industry and Public Administration. It offers support to the research and development activities of the private and public researchers through supercomputing and its applications. SCS S.r.l collaborates with many Italian and International industries and also participates in EU funded projects that are part of the 7th Framework Programme.
CINECA, the largest supercomputing centre in Italy, represents Italy in the PRACE Research Infrastructure, and participates in the promotion, development and exploitation of advanced HPC technologies for research.
